“Why would you do that at your age?” or “That is so cool!”—these are just a few reactions I get when I tell people I’m taking hip hop classes at Richmond Urban Dance.
Yes, I’m a senior citizen—old enough to be a grandmother, maybe even a great-grandmother to some of the other students—but I started hip hop ten months ago, and I haven’t stopped. Here’s why I keep coming back.
1. It Keeps My Body Moving
Although my body can’t do everything it once could, it’s still amazing. Dance keeps it flexible, strong, and energized, helping me stay active in ways exercise alone can’t.
2. It Keeps My Mind Sharp
Hip hop requires focus:
Remembering sequences of steps
Coordinating arms, hands, head, and feet
Making smooth transitions
It’s brain exercise that’s far more fun than Wordle or crossword puzzles.
3. It Keeps Me Laughing
In the Seniors Only class, we laugh constantly. Learning routines, trying again, finally nailing them—it’s joy, movement, and community all rolled into one. You leave class smiling, sweaty, and only a little sore.
4. Mandy Creates a No-Judgment Zone
Our instructor, Mandy, encourages us to engage fully while honoring our own styles and limitations. This supportive environment lets everyone shine, no matter their skill level.
5. Inclusion Across Generations
Even in classes with younger dancers, the no-judgment zone stays strong. I’m inspired by the diversity of the students and welcomed fully—even if I’m in the back corner, doing my best to keep up.
