Let’s be honest—many dancers (and adults in general) hesitate to try new things out of fear:
Sound familiar? You’re not alone. Performance sports, like dance, often reward perfection. Applause comes for the final performance, but the dedication, mistakes, and growth leading up to it often go unnoticed.
It’s easy to let this pattern make us averse to failure. But here’s the truth: mistakes are how we grow.
When I first joined Richmond Urban Dance in June 2023, I stuck to my “comfy classes” in contemporary dance. Trying something new, like adult beginner hip hop, felt intimidating.

I applied this mindset elsewhere too. In September 2023, I started running. I was slow, awkward, and inexperienced—but over time, I improved. I embraced being a beginner and celebrated small wins.
Seeing this growth, plus the joy of adult beginner hip hoppers during our I Am Hip Hop performance, inspired me to return to hip hop classes with confidence and excitement.
Now, I leave each class energized, challenged, and eager to learn more!

Whether you’re taking:
…let this be your sign: try that class, embrace mistakes, and watch yourself grow. Even if you feel awkward at first, every step is part of your journey.
